01 · Why did this happen?

I'm a complete beginner. What task should I start with on day one?

The best first task is one you already know well — where you know what a good output looks like — because that's the only way you can judge whether Claude's output is good or bad. If you're unfamiliar with the task domain, you can't evaluate Claude's performance or know what to fix in your prompt.

Good first-task options:

Weekly or daily report writing: You know exactly what you did this week, so you can immediately spot if Claude's version has gaps or misunderstandings.

Polishing something you've already written: You know the original intent, so you can judge whether the revision preserved it and whether it actually improved things.

Meeting minutes: You know what was decided and what the action items were, so you can verify Claude's organized version is accurate.

Avoid using Claude on day one for tasks in domains you don't understand — like having it analyze a financial report you can't read yourself. You can't tell if it's right, can't give effective correction instructions, and the trial experience will be poor.

Day one's goal isn't to tackle your hardest task. It's to build intuition for how to give good instructions, how to judge output quality, and how to use follow-up prompts to refine results. Once that intuition exists, every future task becomes faster to handle.

02 · What is the mechanism?

I've tried Claude a few times and the answers all feel generic and not very useful. What's going wrong?

'Answers all feel generic' usually comes from a few sources:

First, your prompt doesn't give Claude enough constraints. 'Write me a thank-you email' only gets a generic response because Claude doesn't know who it's for, what your relationship is, what you want to emphasize, or how long it should be. Add that information and the output immediately becomes targeted.

Second, your question has a standard answer. Questions like 'what is a sales funnel' will produce similar outputs regardless — that's just the standard explanation of the concept. Low output variation doesn't mean Claude isn't useful; it means you should ask more specific questions (e.g., 'for our B2B SaaS product's sales funnel, where are the most common drop-off points at each stage, and how do we improve them?').

Third, you haven't set a role. Claude without a role setting tends toward neutral, balanced, covers-all-bases answers. If you need a specific analytical angle, give it a concrete role ('you are an analyst who is skeptical about this industry').

Fourth, you haven't told Claude what you DON'T want. Telling Claude 'don't use bullet points,' 'don't give me multiple options — give me only your top recommendation,' or 'don't repeat things I already know' immediately makes outputs more targeted.

03 · How does it affect me?

Claude sometimes gives wrong answers. How should I think about this?

This is one of the most important questions, and one of the biggest cognitive gaps between beginners and advanced users.

Claude does make mistakes, and they come in a few types:

Factual errors: Claude may misstate a statistic, mix up a timeline, or be off on information after its training cutoff. These are highest-risk when you need precise numbers or current information. Solution: for any important factual claim, verify independently (search engine, official sources, your own database).

Reasoning bias: In domains where Claude is uncertain, it may be overconfident — giving advice that sounds plausible but has real problems. These errors are harder to spot than factual ones because the logical framework looks right. Solution: in high-stakes decision contexts, treat Claude's analysis as a starting point, not a conclusion. Add your own judgment and domain expertise.

Misunderstanding your intent: Claude may misread your question and then very thoroughly answer something you didn't ask. Solution: if the output is clearly off from your expectations, check whether your prompt was ambiguous, then clarify with a follow-up instruction.

The right mindset: Claude's output is a high-quality draft, not a definitive judgment to be accepted blindly. Your judgment is the final checkpoint — and that doesn't change just because AI is involved.

04 · What should I do?

Is there a way to make Claude remember my preferences so I don't have to re-explain every time?

Yes — and there are different levels of approach:

Level 1: Prompt templates (lowest friction, available immediately). Store your common settings (tone, format, role) in a note somewhere and copy-paste them each time. This isn't 'Claude remembered' — it's 'you brought the settings with you' — but the effect is the same.

Level 2: Claude Projects System Prompt (recommended). Create a Project in Claude.ai and fill in your fixed settings in the "Instructions" field. Every new conversation in that Project automatically applies those settings — you do nothing. This is currently the lowest-effort, most consistent method.

Level 3: Claude Projects Knowledge field. If you have large amounts of fixed background material (company overview, product specs, terminology reference), upload them to the Project's Knowledge field. Claude can reference that material when answering in every conversation.

Important to understand: Claude doesn't have long-term memory the way humans do — it doesn't automatically remember what you said across conversations. Shift 1: From 'asking around' to 'assigning tasks with intent'

The right approach: one task, one conversation. Meeting notes is one conversation, client email is another, planning is a third. Each conversation stays clean, findable, and consistent in quality.

Shift 3: From 'accepting the first output' to 'treating Claude as a drafting machine'

Claude's first output is usually good — but rarely the best it can produce. The beginner mistake: the output feels slightly off, so you give up and conclude "Claude isn't suited for this task." The advanced approach: treat the first output as a draft, then refine it with follow-up instructions. "The second paragraph is too long — compress it to two sentences." "The tone is too formal — rewrite it the way I'd talk to a colleague." "I lost the logic in point three — re-explain it with a concrete example." This 'draft → revise → revise' iteration is far faster than starting over, and the final output will be dramatically better than the first attempt.
